The First 25 years,
1991 – 2016
A Brief History of the Seniors
Alliance.
The Isle of Wight Golf Alliance was
formed in 1921, and was open to members of all affiliated Isle of
Wight Golf Clubs. It proved so successful that there was a long
waiting list to join and it experienced a lot of unpopular balloting
out into individual competitions. In 1991 it was decided that to
ease the problems but still enabling members to join and play, a
Seniors section was created. Initially it was for members over the
age of 55, but later changed to over 60 years of age.
On its formation in 1991, the Seniors
Alliance consisted of seven clubs, namely Cowes, Freshwater Bay,
Newport, Osborne, Ryde, Shanklin and Sandown, and Ventnor. In 2004,
Westridge was admitted to the Seniors Alliance. At the end of the
2013 season, both Osborne and Shanklin and Sandown decided not to
renew its membership after a dispute over the fee structure that
underpinned the Seniors Alliance.
The First Committee.
On its formation in 1991, the governing
body of the organisation consisted of Fred Porter from Freshwater
Bay GC who was first Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer, and
Brian Allan from Ryde GC, the first Captain of the Seniors Alliance,
plus a club representative from each participating club. That same
simple structure exists today, except that the role of Secretary and
Treasurer are now separate roles.
Only one of the founding members is still
alive today and remains a member, namely Brian Allen, Brian has been
member of Ryde GC since 1970, and apart from being the first Captain
of the Seniors Alliance, he was also the Honorary Secretary for 11
years.He also donated the first trophy to be played for in 1991,
namely the Allen Cup. Brian was made the first Honorary Lifetime
Member for his outstanding and committed work in both establishing
the Seniors Alliance and for its continued successful operation.
Brian was a successful local businessman. He was also the Seniors
Captain at Ryde GC. Brian is long retired and although he stopped
playing golf in November 2015, he continues in competitive sport via
the bowling rinks. The “Godfather” of the Seniors Alliance is also
an expert on wine and whisky, but only in the drinking of them!!
During his tenure as Captain and
Secretary he passed on a simple structure for the continued
operation of the Seniors Alliance. It operates in that simple format
today. He has given extensive support to his successors and has
always made himself available for advice. The Seniors Alliance owes
a debt of gratitude to Brian for his stalwart support.
The Operating Structure.
The initial Seniors Alliance mandate was
for a fee free reciprocal arrangement whereby each club hosted up to
two events each at their clubs. It was designed to act as a
fraternal golf society, and to share and enjoy the liberal
arrangements made with individual participating clubs. No green fees
were paid for this appreciated privilege. The Seniors Alliance
continues to operate without having to pay a fixed fee to each club
although it does pay a voluntary annual honorarium to each club as a
thank you for their services.
The Seniors Alliance is continually
grateful for the hospitality shown by each participating club, and
they are be thanked them for their continued generosity in allowing
us to use their facilities.
The committee of the Seniors Alliance
does excellent work on behalf of their members and all of their
efforts are to be commended. They have a mandate for the day to day
running of this operation and only where major change is
anticipated, is the advice of the membership obtained via the AGM,
an EGM or a paper ballot. The Rules and Regulations, last updated
and approved by the membership in 2013, are the guiding principles
for the continued operation of this organisation.
The finances of the Seniors Alliance are
governed by the simple rules of accountancy, ensuring thatall
expenditure is accounted for, and is audited annually by an external
auditor . The auditor is usually a member with a background in
accountancy or banking. From 2010, Godfrey Harrison, the then
Honorary Treasurer, established a more efficient method of operation
with a more stringent accountancy method for both expenditure and
income, with the aim of maintaining the Seniors Alliance on a strong
financial footing. With colleagues he overhauled the funding of
competitions, making some self funding, and in adjusting the prize
money v penalty shots process, so that it was spread around more
equitably. He passed on his legacy to his successor with a healthy
bank balance. Godfrey is to be commended for his outstanding
contribution.
The Isle of Wight Golf Alliance (Seniors)
is a unique feature of Island Golf, and whereas similar Alliance
organisations on the mainland have been disbanded, ours continues to
flourish. We should all strive to spread the message that the
Seniors Alliance is alive and well and hopefully, will continue to
prosper for many years to come.
